THE STORY OF POTATOES
Potatoes were planted about 5000 years ago in the territory of today’s Peru in South America. Potatoes came to Europe in the first half of the 16th century for the first time when the Spanish occupied the empire of the Inca and brought gold and silver to the old continent and also several new plant species among which were potatoes. The first record of potatoes in the Czech is dated back to 1623 when they were served on the table of Vilem Slavata. However, it was a rare case and we began to grow them and a larger scale in our country from the second half of the 18th century.
